Description
To take part in European Culture Days, visit the Maison d'Izieu – admission is free and open to all
Normally, the house where the children from the colony founded by Sabine and Miron Zlatin lived is only accessible as part of a guided tour. On this particular day, however, it is open to the public free of charge.
Listed as a historic monument, it was designated a site of national remembrance alongside the Vélodrome d’Hiver and Camp Gurs over 30 years ago, in 1993.
Inside, only the classroom has been ‘recreated’. Sabine Zlatin’s wish was to use the empty space to evoke the children’s absence. In the dining hall, their letters and drawings, which bear witness to their daily lives, are on display. In the former dormitories, portraits pay tribute to each of the 44 children who were rounded up.
