It would be impossible to talk about Belley without mentioning the child of the country, the famous gastronome Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, Alphonse de Lamartine, who did part of his studies at the college that now bears his name, and other characters such as Jean-Pierre Camus or Saint-Anthelme.
But other great figures have marked the history of South Bugey.
Culoz, hometown of the Serpollet brothers, precursors of the automobile, also welcomed Henri Dunand, founder of the Red Cross and Gertrude Stein, who found refuge there after staying in Billignin, a hamlet of Belley.
