Description

A Song for Wangari is, above all, the story of a child filled with wonder at nature, who grew up to become a woman—a scholar, an activist, a lover, a woman who was betrayed—yet who always stood firm in her defense of the Earth and human dignity.
She and He are friends. They share a mutual admiration and a common conviction: to tell the story, in their own way, of Wangari Maathai, the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. They first discovered her through her autobiography, *The Woman Who Planted Trees*, and decided to write an ode to her—a song. Not by recounting her entire life, not by making a biopic. No. By choosing the poetic and evocative power of words, of theater, of bodies dancing to music composed for her. She and He weave a journey together. Their voices and bodies meet, intersect, and respond to one another, transcending death and differences, during this theatrical celebration: from her childhood in the Aberdare Mountains at the foot of Mount Kenya to her studies in the United States, from her return to a decolonized but unequal Kenya to her political and ecological struggles, all the way to the international recognition of a woman who became a symbol of resistance and hope.
