Description

‘A Song for Wangari’ traces the life story of a free-spirited, activist and visionary woman, blending poetry and activism. A performance combining theatre, music and dance, serving as an ode to Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
Where do we find the strength to get back on our feet when everything comes crashing down? *A Song for Wangari* is the story of a child filled with wonder at nature, who grew up to become a learned woman, an activist, a lover, a woman betrayed, yet one who always stood firm in defence of the Earth and human dignity. Part narrative, part celebration, *A Song for Wangari* traces the journey of Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Performed by a close-knit duo – She and He – the show blends poetic and activist theatre with music and dance. Together, they embody, recount and summon the spirit of Wangari in a vibrant song, bridging the past and the present. Through their words and bodies, they weave a journey: childhood in the Aberdare Mountains, studies in the United States, a return to a decolonised yet unequal Kenya, political and environmental struggles – right up to the international recognition of a woman who became a symbol of resistance and hope. Text and direction: Armelle Bossière Acting and dramaturgy: Carla Gondrexon & Hervé Charton Set design: Jennifer Phardin-Decoin Set construction: La Grisette d’Osier Choreography: Marius Sawadogo Musical direction: Ismaël Boerner Original soundtrack – composition and performance: Ismaël Boerner, Nils Kwiatowski & Lionel Rolland
