In keeping with the national theme – ‘Heritage at Risk’ – this opening night invites you to celebrate another, more understated yet essential legacy: that of women whose works and life stories have sometimes been overlooked over the years.
The trio comprising Mairéad Hickey (violin), Elia Cohen Weissert (voice and cello), and Josquin Otal (piano) presents a
programme dedicated to three major female composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries who have long remained in the shadows: Mel Bonis, Lili Boulanger and Fanny Mendelssohn.
Through their works, contrasting yet complementary musical worlds emerge: the expressive richness and at times intimate nature of Mel Bonis’s music, the sensitive and dazzling depth of Lili Boulanger’s, and the refined and inventive style of Fanny Mendelssohn, a key figure of musical Romanticism.
The musical performances are interspersed with talks and discussions about the project organised by the association, amongst others, and dedicated to Odette Laguerre (1860–1956), a local figure who lived in Artemare, Ceyzérieu, Don and Belmont. A committed and multifaceted woman, she distinguished herself as a feminist, peace activist, progressive thinker and business leader.
