Description
First excavated by amateur archaeologist Jean Reymond between 1962 and 1964, and then by Robert Vilain from 1976 to 1988, the Thoys II rock-shelter site in Arboys-en-Bugey has revealed evidence of multiple human occupations throughout prehistory.
The resumption of excavations in 2024 and 2025 has revealed a particularly rich and complex chronological and cultural sequence. The remains discovered attest to several phases of prehistoric occupation, the earliest of which date back to the end of the Upper Paleolithic, approximately 12,500 years ago.
This lecture will present the main findings from the last two excavation campaigns and will place them in context with other prehistoric sites in southern Ain, in order to better understand the history of the region’s earliest settlements.
A reception will be held following the lecture.
