To mark European Heritage Days, the Maison d’Izieu is offering a special programme over the weekend.

Listed as a historic monument, it became a site of national remembrance alongside the Vélodrome d’Hiver and the Camp de Gurs over 30 years ago, in 1993. Inside, only the classroom has been ‘recreated’. Sabine Zlatin’s intention was to use the empty space to evoke the absence of the children. In the dining hall, their letters and drawings, which bear witness to their daily lives, are on display. In the former dormitories, portraits pay tribute to each of the 44 children who were rounded up. The Maison d’Izieu offers a unique experience: guided tours of the museum. The guides will be on hand to lead you on guided tours of the various areas. They will shed light on a number of themes. Guided tour and meet-and-greet with Johanna Quillet (40 mins): 3 pm and 5 pm on Saturday, 10.30 am on Sunday As part of her artist-in-residence programme at the Maison d’Izieu, photographer and visual artist Johanna Quillet is organising three events to mark European Heritage Days, which will take place on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September. These will include a guided tour and discussion focusing on the initial stages of her artistic practice, as well as the use of a ‘chambre claire’ – an optical device and viewing space that allows the real world and its image to be superimposed, enabling an exploration of the local area and a fresh perspective on the landscape, what it holds within and what it reveals. – Guided tour of the village of Izieu and a visit to the Martin-Barbaz cellar with a tasting* (1½ to 2 hours) 10.30 am Limited places, booking required (supplement: +€2), grants access to the museum’s other guided tours * Wines and fruit juices (Excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to health; please drink in moderation)
