Coline, the clarinetist, makes Toyo sing; all sorts of sounds seem to come out of him… Gillou befriends Toyo; they hit it off immediately. And since Gillou is very—really, truly very—flexible, he slips inside and settles in like a Pagurus Bernardus… better known as a hermit crab. For Gillou, Toyo becomes a shell, a costume, a hat, a tightrope walker’s tower! Or a windsock, a periscope, an airplane, a house… Gillou straddles him, moves through him in every direction, bends and twists, gets tangled up, and even gets stuck inside sometimes! Don’t worry—Coline is there to help him wriggle free! So Gillou dives right back in, hides completely inside, and disappears for a few moments… before popping out the other end! Then the sound of the clarinet fills the air; Gillou is enchanted by the melody, and off they go with Toyo, dancing away in a melancholic dance… Truly, they love each other… So they invite Coline to join them; Gillou snuggles up to Toyo, Coline balances herself on his back, and the clarinet plays, gently and majestically, the music of Gillou and Toyo’s story…
