The village of Conzieu grew up around an ancient Bugey priory that belonged to the episcopal see of the town of Belley. At the beginning of the 12th century, the priory was given to the Cluny abbey, which ensured its development.

The monks of Cluny led to the development of the church and the village from the 12th century onwards.
The first written records of the commune mention Conzeu in the 13th century, evolving into Consiacus/Conziacus in the 14th.
Certain priors played an important role in the history of the region: Claude de la Palud, benefactor of the churches, Cardinal de Varambon, Nicolas de Bignes, bishop of Belley...
The church has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1908.

The choir and nave are remarkable: the keystones are studded with a crown of smaller keystones. The ogives descend very low on the bases set into the corners of the walls.
The three-sided choir dates from the 13th century. It is a success of early Gothic art in Bugey.
The Saint-Sébastien chapel is also remarkable: one of the finest examples of the development of flamboyant Gothic art in southern Bugey. The church features a 16th-century repositorium, a prior's tombstone, an original pulpit and several statues, including that of Saint-Sébastien, patron saint of the parish.
The village's history is built around the villagers' disputes over the preservation of communal property. The village hall is now located on the original site of the priory buildings.
The war memorial is decorated with a martyr's palm.
Castle of Montcarrat in the hamlet of Crapéou was the seat of a fiefdom with high, medium and low justice, of which only ruins remain today. The lords of Cordon, Evieu and Les Marches were its owners.
