Comic book enthusiasts, history buffs, or both, mark your calendars! On Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, 2026, the Maison d'Izieu is hosting the first Max and Otto Festival.
The arts were of paramount importance to Sabine Zlatin. She considered them an integral part of the education that the children of the colony should receive. They drew a lot, influenced by the books of their time. Among them, two children stood out. Max Tetelbaum and Otto Wertheimer had a definite talent for drawing.
Through this festival, the Maison d'Izieu pays tribute to them and highlights the work of artists committed to passing on the history of World War II, the memory of the Holocaust, and the universal values that inspired Sabine Zlatin.
The guest list and program are currently being finalized!

In the meantime, here's a sneak peek at the weekend...
Encounters!
▶ Round tables and debates
The artists will present their work and then discuss and debate the following themes with the audience:
- “From novel to comic book: reinventing a work”
- “The Holocaust in comic books: conveying the unspeakable”
Events!
▶ Face-to-face with the artists
Come and meet the artists in a “conference” or “demonstration” format, or during discussions over a book signing. Illustrators, authors, scriptwriters, and colorists await you in the museum's rooms, which will be taken over by the world of comics for the occasion.
Get your pencils ready!
▶ Active audience participation
Young and old alike can give free rein to their imagination in the creative room. The Maison d'Izieu wanted to create a festival that was open to everyone, where everyone could find an activity or a work that spoke to them (mini comic strip competition, drawing scriptwriting, collective fresco).
A feast for the eyes!
▶ Exhibition of original comic strips and drawings
In the Galerie Zlatin—the exhibition space for originals—comic strips and drawings loaned by artists or belonging to the Maison d'Izieu collection will be on display for this first comic book festival.
Activities will be offered throughout the day for all types of visitors to the museum.
Food will be available on site: food trucks and a picnic room will be available.
And there will always be the option of picnicking in the orchard if the sun is shining!
Guided tours of the house are also scheduled and can be accessed with an additional ticket.
