Well, no, despite its title, the work is anything but “small” in terms of its length, at around 1 hour 30 minutes, and in the majesty and brilliance of some of its movements, such as the great fugue “Cum sancto spirito,” worthy of the finest works of the master of the genre, Johann Sebastian Bach, or the supplicating Kyrie, a true evocation of man facing his destiny, expressed from the very first bars and through the anguished rhythmic ostinato of the piano. The work ends with the Agnus Dei, a poignant illustration entrusted to the solo viola of the composer's powerful and fervent audacity.
