National commemoration of the victims of deportation during the 1939–1945 war in Virieu-le-Grand, held in the former school playground, followed by a reception and exhibition in the village hall.
Established by the Act of 14 April 1954, the National Day of Remembrance for the Deportation is officially scheduled for Sunday 26 April 2026. The Virieu-le-Grand Veterans’ Association (chaired by Mr René ORDAS) and Virieu-le-Grand Town Hall are organising this commemoration. Volunteers from the municipal library, the Les Marionnettes de la Tour association and the Valromey LGBT+ collective are lending their support. This commemoration will take place at 11am in the courtyard of the former state school at 280 Route Hauteville, made available by the owners (La Prèf association). It will consist of two main parts: the official ceremony with speeches and a rendition of La Marseillaise, followed by two contributions involving the reading of texts by the Valromey LGBT community and – subject to confirmation – the Les Patios centre. The ceremony will conclude with Le Chant des Marais and the song Nuit et Brouillard (Jean Ferrat).
Participants are invited to a reception in the village hall, where the exhibition ‘Ain 1939–1945: Paths of Remembrance’ from the Ain Departmental Library will be on display, accompanied by a selection of books available for loan from the Virieu-le-Grand municipal library.
For further reading on the subject, see the fascinating lecture given by Mr ORDAS on 28 April 2024, published as a booklet available at the town hall and viewable on YouTube using the keywords: ‘conférence résistance Virieu le Grand’.
The ceremony will go ahead in the event of rain.
