Raptors: an ambiguous term. For a long time, for most people in the West, the word was used to describe an evil carnivorous bird with a ‘hooked beak’ that ate chickens and could be seen nailed to barn doors or flying through the sky. Nowadays, birds are admired for the beauty of their plumage and flight, and recognised for their essential role in the food chain, such as eagle owls, griffon vultures, kites, buzzards and short-toed eagles.
