Children are particularly protected under international humanitarian law, yet they continue to be targeted in modern warfare. Strikes against children's hospitals, deportations, forced adoptions, rapes, and so on. In Ukraine, the evidence is mounting of deliberate crimes against this particularly vulnerable group, from infancy to adolescence.

Although there are many obstacles to putting a head of state on trial, particularly when the country he leads is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, how is Putin's case different? What is there to suggest that he could be put on trial? And why is the first charge brought against him before the ICC a crime against children?
