National Day of Remembrance for Victims of the Deportation:

The purpose of this day is to remind everyone of this major historical tragedy and the lessons that can be learned from it, so that such events never happen again.

In the early 1950s, former deportees and the families of those who disappeared expressed the wish to see a date set aside in the calendar to commemorate the deportation. The law of 14 April 1954, passed unanimously by Parliament, set the last Sunday in April as the date for this day of tribute.

A ceremony is held every year at the Maison d'Izieu, one of the three national memorial sites for victims of racist and anti-Semitic persecution and crimes against humanity committed with the complicity of the Vichy government, established by presidential decree in 1993.
